Neutron Beam Instruments

Neutron Science Laboratory governs and administers 14 spectrometers together with Tohoku University and Kyoto University in the research reactor JRR-3, JAEA-Tokai. The spectrometers are operated and maintained by these facilities, and our facility centrally administers Joint-User-Program of them. The Use proposal, whose submission deadline is late November of the previous year, is accepted through scientific and technical reviews by several specialized and related referees. In the JRR-3M, the beam time is scheduled for 7 cycles and 175 days a year. About 75% of that is utilized as the user experiments. The JRR-3 consists of a reactor building surrounding a reactor core and a guide hall where 11 spectrometers are constructed along 5 neutron guide tubes transfering incident neutrons from the reactor. NSL possesses 2 spectrometers in the reactor building and 7 the guide hole; Tohoku Univ. 1 and 2 respectively and Kyoto Univ. 2 in the latter. In addition in the JRR-3M, other beam ports and spectrometers are constructed by JAEA, that are independently utilized on neutron scattering and irradiation experiments.

One spectrometer is also owned in Materials and Life Science Experiment Facility (MLF), J-PARC.
